Very nicely explained article about the chakras. Rudolf Steiner also offers a very interesting system of working with the chakras for soul growth in his book How to Know Higher Worlds.

I've added this article to spiri2al.com, please stop by and vote for it if you get the chance :) http://www.spiri2al.com/Yoga/clarifying-the-chakras/

Thanks for our thoughts and insight. The chakras from the healing context are what I refer to as the 'dynamic' system, and generally this is what people are referring to when talking about the chakras. I will post a separate article on this system next week.
A point I make in it is that each person's experience of the chakras is relative to them, hence as you say, many many different ideas about what they do and how, most with relative validity.
There are even those within the yogic/tantric system like Gopi Krishna, who from his experience of Kundalini rising, refuted the chakras of that system even existed, let alone had all the imagery and other descriptions of the tantric texts.
Fascinating stuff indeed.

Nice post. I think the differences in the two views also has to do with those that evolved within a purely spiritual context and those that evolved within a healing one. From what I understand, there are the tantric and kundalini yogic texts that are the source for the former, and then there were Ayurvedic medicine texts that explored the chakras to some extent within a healing context, and some of both influenced Western thought. I recently reviewed a book called The Subtle Body, by Cyndi Dale, on my own blog, which probably falls into the 'new age' category (and is definitely focused on healing), but she covers dozens of different chakra mappings that she found in various texts. It was really surprising to her just how many different mappings there were, even just within Indian sources, let alone in other parts of the world. I think different teachers/systems evolved based on what their 'goal' was. Anyway, fascinating stuff.
