Whether your stressed out, or just still wound up from your day, the consequences are the same. Without a good night’s sleep, your energy levels are drained and you’re just not yourself. Before you take potentially addicting sleeping pills, settle your mind and body naturally with the following routine. It only takes about 10 minutes, and it doesn’t require any previous knowledge of Yoga. This set, which comes from the ancient technology of Kundalini Yoga, will provide benefits to your nervous system and digestion as well as helping you gets a great night’s sleep.

As with any exercise, precaution should be taken if you are dealing with any serious illness or medication. Listen to your body and stop if you begin to feel discomfort. If sleeping problems persist, always see your doctor.

First, kneel down and sit on your heels. If this is uncomfortable for you, you can sit on the floor between your heels. If this too is not comfortable, you can sit in a cross legged position. Keep your spine straight and lay your hands in your lap. Close your eyes and breathe deeply. Stay here for about a minute and try to let go of any thoughts, especially any worries or thoughts from your day.

In the same position, keeping your spine straight, lean back about 30 degrees. Use your abdominal muscles to keep you balanced. Breathe long and deep in this position for about a minute.

Keeping the same seated position, cross your arms, holding on to opposite elbows. Start to slowly circle your torso in a clockwise direction. Close your eyes and make the largest circles possible without loosing your balance. Continue circling and breathing deeply for one to three minutes.

Otherwise, bend forward and, if you can, grab your toes. If not, don’t worry and do not strain, just grab your ankles, calves or wherever you can reach comfortably without bending your knees. Keep breathing deeply through your nose and try to relax all the muscles in your legs and spine. Three minutes are recommended here, but you can do as few as one.

Bring your spine straight with your legs still out in front of you. Bring your hands to the floor by your sides and use your arms to lift your body off the ground. Lift up and drop down 20 times. Don’t worry; you don’t have to lift your feet. (This move should be avoided if you are pregnant or on the first three days of your menstrual cycle).

The last posture is bridge pose. From a seated position, bend your knees and place your feet flat on the floor. Place your hands on the floor under your shoulders and lift your hips up. Make sure your hands and feet are planted firmly on the floor. Your arms and legs are at a 90 degree angle to the ground, while your body is parallel to the floor, forming a bridge. If you can, let your head drop back and breathe long and deep. Squeeze your abdominals but relax your glutes, (your butt muscles). Hold this pose for as long as you can from one to three minutes continuing to breathe deeply.

Lie down flat on your back for 30 seconds. Again, breathing long and deep. And here comes the best part! On the next inhale, stretch your hands up straight, as if reaching for the stars. Really stretch, reach up and breathe in as much air as possible. Hold your breath in as you grab hold of some of those stars and start to pull them down. Exhale slowly and pull down as if you are resisting and opposing force—your hands and arms should shake. Pull your hands down to your chest, exhaling fully. Breathe a big sigh of relief. Go ahead let it out! Repeat this motion 3 times and go to bed.

The Yogis have used these secrets to a great night’s sleep for thousands of years. Now it’s your turn to share in the benefits. Do this every night and you will wake up every morning feeling refreshed, regenerated and full of energy to take on your day.

(an interview with UnitedYogis.com)

What does yoga mean to you?

Yoga is a way of approaching life, of Being, of which asana is only a small (but important) part. Yoga allows us to shed the things that prevent us from knowing our True Essence, and our connection with the Divine. It’s a tool that removes stress from the body and mind, cultivates Peace and nurtures Consciousness – both in ourselves and the World.

What has been the most important manifestation you’ve created?

When your consciousness starts to merge with cosmic Consciousness, you start to acquire the 5 energies of Shiva: cit-sakti (all-Consciousness), ananda-sakti (all-Bliss), jnana-sakti (all-Knowledge), kriya-sakti (all-Action), iccha-sakti (all-Will). This requires letting go of many things while building Peace in the body and mind. When it happens, there is no difference between manifestation and being in the Flow, between you as a creator and as an instrument of the Divine. I was going to jokingly say: ‘Do I really have to say just one thing?’, but the truth is, we create nothing alone… The Secret and the Law of Attraction don’t work because they don’t recognize this fundamental Truth, one that was known thousands of years ago by the yogic rishis. It is through our choices that we align ourselves with the Divine… and then everything becomes possible.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned from your yoga practice?

That yoga is about Being and the choices we make… more than any physical act. When that is understood, Peace arises, and what is possible becomes limitless.

What is the meaning of consciousness to you?

I make the distinction between consciousness (little c, or citta) and Consciousness (big C, or Cit). Consciousness (little c) is the sum of our awareness and the product of our choices in life – what to think, what to do, how to be. Consciousness (big C) is beyond any definition or description our consciousness (little c) is capable of. It leaves you speechless, breathless. Pure awareness of Love, the Divine. Without Consciousness, nothing could exist. Our consciousness merges with Consciousness as we progress on our path. This is what we are designed on every level of our being to do.

How do you feel the light and know that it is there?

It’s in everything I see, feel, hear, touch, taste and everything in between. It’s in the many miracles that happen everyday to nurture us, regardless of whether we live in harmony with the Divine or not. It is present in every moment of Bliss we experience.

Of all the people in your life, who was the most influential in helping you to form your life path and why?

My friend Steve, a yogi who lives yoga and has integrated its wisdom on every level of his being. It was his energy, his Being, not any one thing he said or did, but the sum of it all (especially the stuff between the lines). I don’t think he was aware of it when it first began, but I think he’s aware of it now.

What is the most effective/critical asana and why?

Savasana – it’s the only posture in which it is safe for everyone to practice pranayam, anytime.

What is yoga’s role in making this world a better place?

Yoga can be used in two ways – to destroy consciousness, or to nurture it.
I prefer the second option.

Yoga has been such an amazing part of my journey to wholeness and balance and I am so grateful to myself for making and sticking with my commitment to the practice. This week I was reading Yoga Journal and there was an article about having a home practice. I started my practice at a gym a little over 5 years ago and about 4 years ago I brought it home with a video that a friend had given me of Rodney Yee.

Rodney and I have a date now just about every morning for AM Stretch. I love this video because its only 20 minutes. Heck anybody can squeeze 20 minutes in right? “They” say that 20 minutes of practice several times a week is as good for you if not better than a full hour and a half practice.

So I’m reading this article and it’s talking about different sequences you can try and different times of the day that you can practice and how having a home practice can seem a little daunting at first to most people because they just can’t figure out how to do yoga with out a little help and guidance from a teacher.

This is why I love Rodney, he’s with me every morning – by now I’ve actually memorized the entire video. He’s consistent, always there and he’s my favorite way to start the day. The thing that’s nice about doing the same video every morning is I really get to see where I’m at. Some days I’m not on the mat at all and I catch myself doing my leg stretch about 10 seconds ahead of Rodney – this would be a day where I’m ahead of myself. Other days I listen to my body and give myself extra time in Down Dog – this is where I’m really in touch with what my body needs. Then we have days like today. The funny thing about home practice is of course you are doing it at home!

So here we go starting out with a little relaxation to get present:

Rodney – “Surrender to the Earth”

Upstairs – CRAAASH (“Sorry Ms. Wyldfyre – I dropped the chair”, says Nate my son’s buddy who slept over)

Now we move through the relaxation process and we are really cooking – moving our legs left, and right, stretching the arms out to the side, now we’re in bridge pose. What a great morning! Moving along now we roll over into cobra, now back to the mat, now updog – What’s that? Updog????

Kack, Kack, Kack – It’s the sound of my 17 year old labrador making vomit on the floor – quick off the mat, run to the kitchen, shoo the cat away, grab the paper towels! Bend, stretch, squat, wipe, run for the rubbish barrel, Ack out of paper towels – shoo kitty get away from the there, wipe some more, ok all cleaned up! Now where were we?

Oops – missed Downdog, missed Lunge, missed Supported Chair Pose – God Rodney’s already back on the floor, no standing poses today.

Alright, lets get focused and back on the mat again – Staff Pose into the twist, moving right along twisting to the left, twisting to the right, cleanse those toxins, now cross legged, now up on the pillow for the final forward bends and prepare for meditation.

Closing the eyes, feeling the head right over the chest (WOOF!) , focusing on the breath (WOORF!), feeling the eyes relax back into the head (WOOF! WOOF! WOOF! Pukey dog wants in but he’s going to have to wait) Now entering into 2 minutes of meditation to center the mind (WOOF! WOORF! WOORF!) (MEOW, MRow – now Kitty is joining the chorus).

And me? I’m in the silence. Centered, balanced, focused, and serene – WHAT??? My 2 minutes is up? Thank you God for Yoga, for Rodney, for Kids and Cats and Dogs and Life. It’s all good. Wonder what my practice will be like tomorrow…….

Have a great day!

(This article was originally published online in my blog at Gaia.com in 2007 – my good old dog has since passed – I still workout to Rodney Yee only now I have 3 more tapes that a dear shaman friend gave to me so I have a little variety – they say that’s the spice of life!)

Despite everything you may have heard or read about chakras, there is no unified theory or explanation of exactly what the chakras are and what they do. Unfortunately much of the information on chakras is simply a repeating of what has been said or written elsewhere and the basis of it’s authority is only it’s repetition. Very often components from different theories become mixed together adding to the confusion and misunderstanding.

Perhaps the biggest confusion is between the yogic or Tantric concept of the chakras and western or new age concepts. In the yogic/ Tantric philosophies the chakras are subtle centers of consciousness, but have no energy-status of their own. While in the Western/ new age theories the chakras are seen as energy vortexes connecting each of the subtle bodies and the physical body.

From this ‘dynamic’ view the chakras are energy/consciousness transformers, linking the various subtle bodies (the etheric body, the astral body, the mental body, etc) to the physical. They serve to step down the frequency of the consciousness/energy of the higher bodies, so it can be received by the lower ones.

It was CW Leadbeater of the Theosophists who first proposed these ideas in the early 20th century. Subsequently his ideas became mixed with ideas largely derived from Sir John Woodroffe’s The Serpent Power, a very technical work based on a translation of two sixteenth century Bengali texts, first published in 1919 under the psuedonym Arthur Avalon.

The big difference between these two concepts of the chakras is this. In the yogic/ Tantric concept the chakras are latent dimensions of consciousness to be awakened and activated in the process of spiritual evolution. In the ‘dynamic’ concept the chakras are fluid energy centers and energy portals that have a direct impact on each level of our being from the physical to the spiritual. it is clear then that the two concepts do not exclude each other, and should be viewed and understood separately, to avoid confusion and misunderstanding.

Confusion comes from many of the books, charts and diagrams of the chakras using the Sanskrit names and descriptions from ancient texts (mantra, deity etc), while at the same time allocating colors, crystals and all manner of attributes and activities, derived from the various dynamic concepts of the chakras.

Common among many of the different concepts is the number of the primary chakras being seven. Exactly where they’re located is another matter. But here too we can broadly differentiate between the two primary groups of thought that I am discussing. The main difference between the two is the location of the second and third chakras. In the yogic/ Tantric view the second chakra is located in the lower abdomen at the ‘root of the genitals’ and the third chakra at the navel. From the ‘dynamic’ view the second chakra is at the navel and the third at the solar plexus.

The Sanskrit names are, from top to bottom:

Sahasrara – crown

Ajna – brow

Vishuddha – throat

Anahata – heart

Manipura – navel

Svadhisthana – genitals

Muladhara – base of spine

According to the traditional Tantric teachings, the seven chakras are strung like ‘pearls’ or ‘jewels’ along the central thread of the sushumna nadi, or energy channel, in the center of the spine. On either side of sushumna are ida and pingala. The six yogic chakras below Sahasrara, are located vertically at specific intervals along Sushmana where Ida and Pingala cross it as thery weave upwards.

The tantric yogi aims to direct the subtle pranic ‘airs’ from the feminine Ida and masculine Pingala into the central Sushumna nadi. This activates the dormant Kundalini energy coiled dormant at the base of the spine. Kundalini then ascends piercing each of the chakras in turn as it rises up sushumna. When it reaches the top of the head, the six lower chakras are unified as one at the crown and the ‘union’ of yoga is attained.

The Tantric texts describe the chakras as stations or centers of pure consciousness (chaitanya) and consciousness-power. They are focal points for meditation; depicted as iconographic structures within the “subtle body”. Apart from the Sahasrara, each chakra is described by means of a whole array of symbolic associations or representations. Each chakra, as well as having a specific position in the physical body, element, mantra, and deity, also has a particular number of “petals”, each associated with one of the letters of the Sanskrit alphabet, a corresponding color, shape, animal, plane of existence, sense-organ, sound, and so on. The texts also describe fantastical powers and abilities that are gained as each chakra is pierced.

As is usually the case with complex esoteric systems, many of these associations are quite arbitrary, for example, smell with Muladhara, taste with Swadhishthana, sight with Manipura, etc. The number of petals too seems to be more a device for visualization in meditation than representing any actual reality. After some time of visualizing these forms at specific locations in the body, they would naturally form in the subtle bodies.

The now almost universal application of the rainbow colors to the different chakras, was introduced by Christopher Hills only in the early 1970s. Hills model of personality types based on the chakras that accompanied the rainbow colors is largely forgotten now, but the rainbow had an irresistible appeal and became fundamental in future presentations of the chakras and another flavor in the ongoing mix of their representation.

From a certain viewpoint, this is true, and from other perspectives it is not. So what is kundalini and what is yoga’s relationship to it?

Vedic philosophy, in particular the school of Tantra, see Kundalini as the link between the human body and cosmic Divine consciousness, responsible for creation. Kundalini is a potent seed of this force lying dormant at the base of the spinal column in every human body. According to Vedic and Tantric texts it is coiled around the base of the spinal column in three and a half spirals. Hence the ancient sages of India called it kundalini, the one coiled like a snake, and a snake has been symbolic of kundalini ever since. Kundalini is considered manifest aspect of the Divine – the Divine Mother – ‘Shakti’ (Power or Force). She is seen as the aspect of the Divine present in and as the manifestation and that that animates ‘life’.

The ancient Rishsi (seers) described an elaborate network of 72,000 nadis, an energetic web-like system spread throughout the human body, very much like the meridians of far Eastern systems. The three most important of these nadis spiral upwards from the root of the spinal column ascending to the crown of the head and the seventh yogic chakra called Sahasrahara. The middle channel, considered the most important of all, is called Sushumana. The other two major nadis on either side of Sushmana are called Ida (the feminine/moon channel) and Pingala (the masculine/sun channel). The six yogic chakras, centers of consciousness, are located vertically above one another at specific intervals along Sushmana where Ida and Pingala cross it.

When kundalini is awakened, it begins to rise through sushmana ultimately to reach sahasrahara, uniting with Param Shiva, the eternal unmanifest masculine aspect of the Divine. As it spirals upwards through sushmana, kundalini enters the network of nadis and in ascending opens the chakras/cakras one by one as it rises. (NB:The chakras of the Indian yogic tradition do not correspond to the chakras as they have been understood and popularized in contemporary times.)

It is here that we can see clearly the relationship between yoga and kundalini. As outlined through the eight limbs of yoga, yoga as a spiritual practice is a process of ‘purification’. This purification can be seen as preparation for the awakening and rising of kundalini. Essentially the more purification has been achieved, the faster and more easily kundalini will ascend to the awaiting ‘union’ at the crown of the head.

There are many differing ways for the kundalini to awaken and rise. Probably the rarest is when the kundalini rises directly to the crown of the head Sahasrahara chakra. For such a rising of the kundalini to take place a great deal of ‘purification’ must already have taken place, as spiritual practice in the current or other lives. Unfortunately this is often how kundalini awakening is thought of, and without proper understanding seems highly desirable. More commonly the process takes many many years, and may not even complete in the same lifetime that the rising began. In such an instance the process will begin again and continue in another life, sometimes beginning as early as childhood.

Ideally a person has a well-established and integrated spiritual practice prior to, and initiating kundalini awakening and rising. Even more ideally they have the guidance and protection of a Sat Guru or perfect master. If not, my advice would be to find one, and satisfy yourself that they are indeed a fully liberated being. Each individual experiences this opening in a unique way according to the karmic content of their unconscious. There are lots of common experiences, but each person moves into this awakening on a path of their own. Only a perfect master will be in a position to help guide someone with a kundalini rising.

The Kundalini force in rising, initiates irreversible spiritual purification as it moves through the subtle channels of the body. This cleansing process manifest in the body as yogic ‘Kriyas’. Kriyas are involuntary body movements that occur mostly during meditation or even relaxation. Swaying of the body, rapid movements of the head and shoulders, twitching and jerking, even painful looking contortions, are typical of these ‘Kriyas’. Sometimes kriyas take the form of yoga asanas, with people performing them involunatrily . For the onlooker kriyas may appear strange or even frightening when we don’t understand what is happening within the person. For the person experiencing them they do not cause any bodily harm and can even lead to states of deep absorbtion. ‘Kundalini’, being an energy of Divine consciousness, is aware of what is the appropriate step in the process, making the practitioner perform ‘Kriyas’ that are specific to this end.

Often of greater challenge are the mental and emotional dimensions of this transformational process. Our vasanas*, samskaras* and karmas are held, or stored, in the subconscious. The body in turn holds, or stores the subconscious. We can liken the nadis to the subtle energy storage structure of the subconscious in the body. This means that all experience from our past, that is unhealed, unresolved, or incomplete, is transmuted by the kundalini in it’s movement upward through the body towards the crown of the head ’sahasrahra’. This subconscious material, feelings, emotions, and accompanying beliefs invariably consists of trauma, pain, and fear. In the process of its transformation the egoic mind can experience depression, darkness, and emotional pain, sometimes so deep and inexplicable it seems unbearable. Obviously this can be deeply distressing, not only to the person, but also those close to them. This is exacerbated if there is no awareness of kundalini as the cause, or spiritual process.

Yogic texts elaborate how the kundalini piercing the different consciousness centers (chakras/cakras), can equip the practitioner with siddhis (powers) such as, clairvoyance, the ability to see the past and future, and perceive the existence of subtle planes of existance (among the least dramatic). The vivid and colorful descriptions of the siddhis can be another misguided motivator to pursue awakening the kundalini, in fact these can be quite an unhelpful diversion. When the Kundalini reaches Sahasrahara, and the entire system is ‘purified’ the human spiritual journey is complete as nothing now remains to create the illusion of separation from the Divine and True Nature. This final condition, when all vasanas, samskaras and karmas have been dissolved, is the state known as Moksha. Moksha is then the condition of complete liberation. This differs from enlightenment which begins with the end of identification with mind and reaches it’s final conclusion only with Moksha. Until Moksha is attained, the ‘enlightened’ can still become once more identified with mind, it’s vasanas, samskaras and karmas.

If we make an examination of mystical literature and traditions in cultures outside India we find that kundalini, called by various names, seems to have been a universal phenomenon in esoteric teachings for at least the last three thousand years. Kundalini-type descriptions or experiences are found in esoteric teachings and symbolism of the Egyptians, Tibetans, Chinese, some Native Americans, and the Kung bushmen of Africa. Kundalini has been interpreted from the Bible as “the solar principle in man,” or possibly the concept as ‘pneuma’, and is referenced in the Koran, the works of Plato and other Greek philosophers, possibly as well in alchemical tracts (the philosopher’s stone), and in Hermetic, Kabbalistic, Rosicrucian, and Masonic writings.

Kundalini is then the power of the Divine within us, and it’s awakening and rising will ultimately result in the ultimate ‘union’ of yoga, the union of Divine consciousness in the human body.

*vasana: (Sanskrit) “Subconscious inclination.” From vas, “living, remaining.” The subliminal inclinations and habit patterns which, as driving forces, color and motivate one’s attitudes and future actions. Vasanas are the conglomerate results of subconscious impressions (*samskaras) created through experience. Samskaras, experiential impressions, combine in the subconscious to form vasanas, which thereafter contribute to mental fluctuations, called vritti. The most complex and emotionally charged vasanas are found in the dimension of mind called the subsubconscious, or vasana chitta.

Yoga is an ancient practice and a word meaning to unify or yoke together. What does yoga yoke together? – the mind, the body and the spirit. Springtime is a time when we move out of our winter slumber and start to think about bathing suit weather, we realize that we may not have been as diligent with our exercise routine or maybe we are ready to try something new. One of the major benefits of a yoga practice is that it does tone and strengthen the physical body. Stretching and flexing the muscles, developing upper body strength, improving balance, getting that yoga butt, all are great motivation for starting a practice.

The subtle benefits of yoga though are even more beneficial. Within the practice there is a great deal of time spent learning to focus on the breath. Awareness of the breath connects us at the deepest of levels to the life force that sustains us. Deepening our breathing instantly takes us into a state of relaxation releasing us from the fright or flight response created by the shallow upper chest breathing that most of us do in our daily life. Breath awareness alone is enough to transport you to a deeper space of subtle connection with your own spirit and with the spirit that is all around us. Practicing with a group provides opportunities to share the breath with each other and to note how we are all connected. Group practice also provides a magical support system and can enhance the energy of your practice as each member of the group contributes to creating a safe and supportive environment for each other.

Often as the practice deepens, the asanas or poses will activate releases of emotions, thought forms and other toxins that are stored in the body at the cellular level. The asanas are designed specifically for these subtle benefits as well as the more gross benefits of a lean and muscular physical body.

There are many wonderful styles of yoga and a wide variety of studios throughout the region for sampling them. Yoga is also available at most gyms. Private in home instruction can be a great way to learn the poses and to refine and customize a practice that is perfect for you and your body type and ability. Finally there are a lot of great video based instructional tapes that you can just pop in to your VCR or DVD player and begin your practice right on the living room floor.

As you begin to explore the world of yoga you will discover that the asanas or poses are merely a scratch on the surface of this ancient practice of alignment. There are whole workshops dedicated to just learning the different types of breathing that you can do while practicing. Chanting is another practice that is a part of the yogic tradition. There are also philosophical writings that are available for study. Yoga is a multi-layered, deeply transformational way of life that you can spend your whole life exploring. Come to each practice with beginners mind, that way you’ll reap the maximum benefits!

It is the authenticity of our lives no matter the dogma or ritual we adhere to, which is important. It is with these intentions that we can release the barriers that keep us from seeing beyond illusion or what in Yoga is called Maya. This is often referred to as the veil, though more appropriately, it is all that is nature manifested.

When we connect to that energy how it works through us, is as individual as are each of us. We all have a unique way of relating to this cosmic/universal/god/void/absolute energy. Some prefer to personalize it defining it as spiritual guides or angels, others see light, others sound or smell or taste or feeling or touch sensation—each of them are real and valid. We are all different, yet the same, how the mind translates the message is based on our own experience. So the journey to understand the “self” is perhaps the jumping point for how it is to fall into place; commencing within.

That which comes within this state is a gift; sleep and dreams provide another avenue of an alternate awareness which opens this connection. An intention placed upon the mind prior to meditating or sleep can assist in allowing the mind to step out of the way so that the answer may be received. It is pertinent however, to understand that forcing the process can impede the progress. Sometimes the harder we force and grasp the further the goal retreats. Letting go or allowance prepare us to receive all that we seek. In my experience, when we are ready then all things come of their own accord. There is an ease.

Music stimulated a visual response as I ‘saw’ movement, so sight/vision and sound were at play.

Following this path also opened other channels of reception, as it was within a dream state that sound manifested in the form of musical notes to be a used in my energy work. In another dream it was light that manifested. I perceived beings of light and a name that was sounded upon emptiness; I observed an exchange between ‘God’ and the Archangel Michael.

The manner of the messages has changed or at least the imagery has modified to suit the current situation. Entering yet another altered or heightened state of awareness/consciousness in meditation, I observed a discourse on material for a training manual and an attunement process to assist others and help them pass along this information, guiding the inner journey.

The persons or light beings or sound or movement or words appeared in dream or meditative state. The information was as real, and some even more powerful, as those I received in physical reality through traditional hands on methods.

Any creative expression opens channels to Oneness, with music I sing and my body responds with dance, I think and my mind creates words and I write. We can all connect to all the information that is, was and will be; no matter the name we call it. As we grow along a path to light we reach and move towards our fullest potential, developing abilities which are indeed just manifestations of One.
